Outpost Kaloki

Tycoon Games are Fun Again

Kaloki is a classic sim/tycoon game; here, instead of running a theme park or a railroad, you're running something like Babylon Five, a small trading station in space, with starships showing up and wanting to buy stuff. You build out from your space station core, balancing power and structural needs against the desire to have as many profit-making enterprises as possible.

Along the way, goofy alien characters talk to you, and you're faced with a progression of levels, each with their own challenge, in the classic tycoon-game fashion. But the dialog is fun, the tone light and entertaining, and you never get sunk into the tedium of some tycoon games, where meeting the demands of a particular level requires a lot of grinding labor.

No, this is not a hugely innovative game; but it's got cute art, cheerful lounge music (okay, that might be a negative for some of you), entertaining characters, challenging but never dull levels, and a degree of polish that vastly higher-budget titles can only aspire to.

If you like this genre, what the hell are you waiting for?

Space Station Tycoon?

Costs in Space
Fast and Fun Tycoon in Outpost Kaloki

On first booting Outpost Kaloki, I thought I had the wrong game. I had been told that it was a space station management game but the graphics looked like Cartoon Network versions of retro-science fiction adventures. The Saturday morning-style of animation and the real-time nature of the game play initially fooled me. The dollar amounts popping out of businesses and the animated spaceships made the game feel very different from the “SimCity in Space” that I was expecting. Even the funny voices and alien syllables when you deal with the space aliens are a delightful addition to the game.

A little too simple?

Kaloki Outpost is extremely easy to pick up, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing. Unfortunately the developers stopped there in terms of complexity. It's a tycoon game that doesn't give you so much as a balance sheet to help you understand why your outpost is doing so poorly/well.

The game basically breaks down into three tasks: built a power source, build an income source (which uses power), wait for more money. Rinse. Repeat. Ya, you can mess with some station options, but without any type of response meter outside of a customers-want-this-type-of-station, you have to eyeball whether or not you're helping or hurting yourself.

I was pretty disappointed. I like tycoon games and the reviews on this and other sites are very high in praise. Makes me wonder if we're playing the same game.

Call me doubly impressed. I thought it was hyperbole, but man...Kaloki is the real deal. I've always been a fan of tycoon games, they're my favorite kind in fact. And never have I found one addictive as this (and I've been through the Sim franchise, tycoon, even an MMO tycoon game...).

The diversity of gameplay and the different types of stress you're under (power, time, etc) make this one a cut above. The graphics are wonderfully cartoony and the whole theme is well done. I honestly don't think I would've liked the game as much if had been completely 'serious' about its characters and story.

And the interface is just...flawless.

Anyway, just wanted to throw this out there. If you're curious, download and enjoy. You won't be disappointed. A true diamond amongst the indie rough.
