Dripping with Style

Vigil (published in Europe as Victi) is a remarkable experience. And sometimes a frustrating one, as we'll get to, but let's start with the reasons you may find it not only interesting, but even compelling.

It's a fully 3D graphic adventure, playable almost entirely with the mouse--and the graphics are amazing. Amazingly stark, that is; almost everything is black and white, with splashes of color used to emphasize some features (and something in color is almost always important to the game in some fashion). It is visually striking, stylish, and a clearly points, in a way, to one of the futures for games: as we approach photorealism, photorealism becomes pointless, and the way to create graphically compelling games is to instead adopt an innovative and unique style.

Virtual Villagers is an offbeat sim/tycoon game in which you control a village of castaways on what seems to be a South Pacific island, helping them to build something like an adequate life for themselves. What's unique about it in comparison to other sim/tycoon games is that "time" progresses even when the game isn't running--in other words, if you don't come back to the game for several weeks, you may find that something fairly horrific has happened to your civilization.

God Games Go Casual

You'll find Virtual Villagers 2 on the casual game sites--but don't let that mislead you. This isn't the usual match-three game, but an extremely unusual--and remarkably compelling--game, in which you help an island of primitives survive and thrive. Unusually, the "world" continues when you're not playing--so, Tamagotchi-like, you need to check in every few days to see what's happening and adjust your strategy.

Most conventional computer or video games are designed to keep you playing and hooked for long hours at a time.

Some of our games take a different approach: They're designed to give you a complete, satisfying gameplay experience in a half hour or less. Strange Adventures in Infinite Space is one. Voyager is another.

The first time you play Voyager, you may wonder what the game is about, because you'll click through a few encounters, maybe play a mini-game or two, lose miserably, and wonder why anyone should care. That's the nature of games like this; sometimes you're just screwed by the luck of the draw, but its no big deal, because all you do is start the next game.
